Title: Forwarding ports on multiple computers
Post by BigSky1 on 12/02/11 at 19:11:55
I'm finally getting into this whole router optimization business.  I'm using a Qwest/CenturyLink Actiontec M1000 modem/router.  I only have NAT translation enabled.  Centurylink doesn't even recommend turning on the firewall settings (high, medium, low with a bunch of check boxes).  Doing so definitely shuts down some on line games.  So I'm not sure if port forwarding is necessary with only NAT.  If it still is, I have a question.  If I have multiple computers that will be playing a game like COD Black Ops online simultaneously behind the same router, how do I do port forward if they both need the same ports?  Doesn't this cause some kind of conflict?  Thanks.

Well as far as i can see it would be perfectly ok to connect multiple computers to a LAN game on your local area network with no problems but if you want to port forward and connect them to the same online game a problem does arise. When you forward ports you have to specify to which computer the forwarded ports must go, usually by designating an IP address as the computer to forward the ports to, you clearly can't specify multiple IP addresses to forward to. NAT attempts to get around this problem supposedly but support for proper NAT seems to vary from router to router. It is also worth just pointing out that if it were possible to connect multiple computers on your local network, technically, for legal reasons, each machine should have an individual original of the game and a unique serial key or whichever method is employed.

With the NAT performance being so varied and in many cases unreliable or non functional I can really only direct you back to your router manufacturer, afterall, if they can't fix the problem it is fairly likely that no-one else can either :)

My router allows me to set up port forwarding rules by IP.  So I can set up a rule for PC 1 and PC 2 easy enough.  My question is about the ports themselves.  Some games use a range and some use specific ports.  If the game needs port 33333 and I make two rules to forward that single port to PC 1 and then PC 2, will I run into conflicts if they are playing on line at the same time?  Or is that a non issue?  Of course I have individual game licenses.  My key example would be Call of Duty Black Ops.
